De Martino: Stories

Since 1934, four generations of our family have specialized in producing wines that stand out because of their sense of place, purity and balance. To that end, we farm sustainably and use traditional winemaking techniques in order to produce wines that represent us and faithfully reflect the vineyards they come from.

In the years since then, we have become leaders in innovation at De Martino and we have also scoured the country in search of sites that can showcase the potential of Chile’s many sites and terroirs. Our current focus is on wines from Maipo and Itata but we also make wines from Maule, Cachapoal, Malleco, Limarí and Casablanca.

Today our track record spans over 80 years and we combine the experience of the third generation of the family with the dynamism and vision of the fourth –represented by Marco Antonio and Sebastián De Martino– who, along with winemaker Nicolas Perez, lead the winery’s projects.

We are proud to have been the first winery in Chile to put “Carmenere” on the label of a wine back in 1996. We also pioneered working in century-old vineyards in the Itata Valley, incorporating traditional winemaking techniques that set a precedent in the industry.

Vineyards & terroir: Our main terroir, in Maipo, has gravel soils, in which we mainly grow Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon. Next are our vineyards on the coast of Itata, where we tend old vines – some up to 110 years’ old – in the granite soils, making exciting Cinsault, Muscat and Pais, among other varieties. We also have coastal vineyards in Limarí (limestone/clay) and Casablanca (granite), where we specialize in Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. In the southern region we focus our attention on old vines, field-blends from dry-farmed vineyards in Cachapoal and Maule (granite). Our southernmost vineyard is in Malleco (clay), where we grow Chardonnay.

Varieties cultivated: Red: Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Carignan, Cinsault, Syrah & Pinot Noir. White: Chardonnay, Semillón, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat & Corinto.
