The Johnson family have been vineyard pioneers of Marlborough’s Waihopai Valley sub region for over 20 years. Growing and crafting Spy Valley Wines has led to the discovery of unique micro sites. Wines in the single vineyard Spy Valley ENVOY range  are selected from these unique estate blocks identified over time as exceptional. The Spy Valley ENVOY wines represent the combination of the vineyard site and the art of winemaking at the highest level. The wines are textural and complex and represent the best winemaking tool of all – time.

Amount of Property Planted: Over 400 acres of vineyards.

Terroir: Predominantly flat, three distinct land types are encountered, each subject to their own microclimatic influences. Johnson Estate is a combination of very young, stony free draining lower riverside terraces and older terraces with deeper topsoils, higher clay content with underlying river gravels. The Outpost site, in the Omaka Valley, has north facing hilly slopes with deep loess soils. Area H, in the lower Wairau Valley, is a river flood plain with extremely variable soils from stony river wash to fine, deep alluvium seams.

Varieties Cultivated: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris & Pinot Noir

Organic/Sustainable/Other Certifications: Both the winery and vineyards are certified sustainable by the NZ Winegrowers Sustainable Winegrowing program. Audited annually; Certified to the International Environmental Standard ISO 14001.
